The Benefits of Eye Exercise...

eye exercise

The moment we notice that our vision is not quite as it used to be, we rush off to the optician expecting that we will require to wear glasses or contact lenses. In most cases the scenario is just that. However, we seem to ignore that our eye is made up of muscles, that due to 'over-exercise' or straining can lead to short-sightedness or worse. Lets say you had a sport injury, damaging a particular muscle. The first thing we do then, is physiotherapy - a method to develop and maintain the muscles. Shouldn't it be the same for our eyes? To practice eye exercises should be the first port of call and it will, over time, improve eyesight and restrict any further damage.

Laser surgery has been widely accepted as the ultimate in improving your eyesight, but this can be very expensive and therefore is not accessible to all of us. Simple and cost free eye exercises have been used for over a century and they are a far more natural way to amend your eyesight. The Bates Method was an exercise program to improve eyesight. Dr. William Bates was an ophthalmologist who discovered that through simple exercises, we can train the eye to relax and through doing so, allow the eyes to focus well without straining. Short-sightedness, long-sightedness, poor vision due to aging and even an irregular shaped cornea can all be improved with eye exercises.

By carrying out daily eye exercises, we can give the six muscle groups a good workout, that will in fact help to relax the eye and reduce exertion. For as less as one month, you could find yourself on the road to recovery. It should be noted that for more serious conditions such as glaucoma, it would be better to take the advice of your eye doctor straightaway.

The most obvious benefits of eye exercises is eliminating any tension and minor (or even major) problems with your sight. Our eyesight is so important to each and every one of us. Taking a little time out of your day to exercise the muscles will keep them well toned and increase blood flow to the ophthalmic nerves. Even for common complaints such as dry or lazy eyes, a quick work out can both fortify a lazy eye and distribute fluid in a dry one.

If you are already wearing glasses to give support when reading or doing work on the computer, have you seen any difference in your eyesight? Any improvement? The likely answer is no. In fact, long term users of glasses and contacts are inevitably going to require stronger prescriptions as time passes. The point I am trying to make is that although prescription glasses can be beneficiary short term, they are not getting to the rudimentary problem. Its like hopping around on crutches - they do help but they cannot make our muscles better alone. We need to exercise. Without exercising, unused muscles will become weaker and weaker.

It should not be considered a chore - just 10 or 15 minutes a day is all it takes and if you think about it, the exercises can easily be integrated into every day activities. Its really not much to ask of ourselves, especially when you consider all of the benefits.
